One of our favourite topics to talk about at Well.ca is food! We consume a lot of healthy and fun new food, snacks and spreads. From the quirky to the delicious, we’ve rounded out our predictions for top food trends. Try them throughout the year and make sure to let us know what you think!
Purple Foods
Earlier this year, Whole Foods made the prediction that purple was the way to go based on consumer behaviour. That means purple carrots, cauliflowers and tortilla chips will make it big this year. Why is purple so good? Purple indicates a higher density of nutrients and antioxidants in the food, (eggplants anyone)? According to researchers, antioxidants are good for heart health, and can help to fight inflammation. A little colour goes a long way.
So, if you haven’t tried a wonderfully delicious acai bowl yet (a beautiful combination of blue and purple), then this might be the year to start!
You may have heard about adaptogenic herbs like Maca and Chaga, but not entirely sure what their use is. Adaptogens are powerful healing plants that come in pill or powder form helping to restore and protect the body. The herbs have been increasing in popularity and can easily be added to soups, smoothies or shaken directly into your water! They are known to fight stress and lower cortisol, and immune-stimulating. Some adaptogens we love: Ashwaganda, Baobao fruit, Medicinal Mushrooms, Ginseng (considered the most well-known and potent herb) Holy Basil, all with their own powerful immune boosters.
Coco for Coconuts
Coconut everything from chips to coconut sugar and flour, coconut has replaced has been a welcomed addition to our snacks and baking. There are so many great uses for coconut, and coconut chips are an easily digestible and quick snack to have anytime.
Anti-Inflammatories
The benefits of anti-inflammatories are widespread. Things like ginger and turmeric help ease swelling and pain from inflammation. You can even add a punch of flavour to your meals, salads and smoothies by sprinkling ginger, turmeric and cinnamon on them.
Alternative Pasta
Wheat-free pasta is going to be big this year! Consider the alternatives such such as quinoa, lentils and chickpeas instead of traditional pasta. You can even add in kelp and wakame and you’ve got a range of healthy options for pasta that won’t leave you feeling heavy and sluggish!
