Okay, we’ve heard it a million times…and it’s sinking in: we know that we need to wear sunscreen. But we didn’t know that there is more to a good summer beauty routine than just that.
We all know that prolonged sun exposure can lead to premature aging. The heat and sun can also cause clogged pores and cause oil glands to work overtime. We also sweat more which can cause dehydration and a loss of minerals and vitamins. In order to counteract all of this damage and maintain a healthy radiant glow, we need to take steps to replenish and protect our skin—daily.
1. Add Sunscreen—In the Right Order
Wash your face in the morning; then apply your face cream (see below); then, smooth a generous amount of sunscreen over your entire face and neck (and décolletage if it’s exposed). For those of us office dwellers that only take the occasional lunchtime or coffee break stroll, SPF 15 is enough and reapplication likely isn’t necessary. If you’re outside more, use an UVA-UVB sunblock with SPF 30 that dries quickly and is shine-free (and reapply in a few hours). Wait 10 minutes for the sunscreen to be absorbed by your skin and blot off any excess oil. Dust a powder foundation over your face to matte any lingering shine and apply the remainder of your makeup.
We love Green Beaver Natural Mineral Sunscreen Lotion. It will give you smooth and invisible protection from the sun and is made of organic ingredients.
2. Add Vitamin C to Your Routine
When your skin is oily, a creamy, hydrating cleanser just won’t cut it. Switch to a gentle foaming formula that will break down excess sebum and one with Vitamin C in it is perfect for your summer skin. Vitamin C contains antioxidants that help repair sun damage, reduce sunburn caused by exposure to ultraviolet B radiation and prevent the consequences of long-term sun exposure. Vitamin C is also great in preventing and reducing acne.
Try Avalon Organics Vitamin C Refreshing Cleansing Gel. It is an antioxidant-intensive cleanser that lathers, brightens and provides defense against sun aging and other effects.
3. Ditch Your Night Cream & Switch to a Lighter Moisturizer During the Day
During teeny-weeny-bikini season, a rich night-time moisturizer is like wool socks—unnecessary. That said, a daytime moisturizer is important, even in the summer. Choose a water-based one that balances the level of water within the skin. If you also choose a moisturizer that is tinted then you wipe out the step of foundation (which can be heavy for summer) and save yourself some time in the morning!
One of our faves is the Pacifica Alight Multi-Mineral BB Cream. It will leave you with a natural, radiant glow.
4. Exfoliate
In the summer, skin cells are shed at a very quick rate daily, so if you don’t get rid of the dead cells sitting on top of your skin, they can cause it to look dull and dry. Exfoliating regularly improves skin’s elasticity and its ability to absorb moisture and retain the nutrients in your moisturizer.
We love Skin Essence Organics Facial In A Jar. It helps achieve smooth, vibrant skin by removing dead skin cells that clog pores and form blackheads.
5. Add a Toning Mist to the Mix
Extra sweat means that dirt, oils and other environmental chemicals are trapped close to the skin and your pores. It’s important to keep your pores closed and skin cool by using a non-alcohol based toner. Facial toners are refreshing and, with the right ingredients, they restore, repair and hydrate the surface of the skin.
One of our favourites is Sukin Hydrating Mist Toner. It combines German chamomile and rosewater to soothe skin, and is perfect for refreshing your skin on a hot day.
Another fave is Andalou Naturals Brightening Clementine + C Illuminating Toner. It’s packed with super fruit antioxidants and vitamin C to brighten skin and improve tone and texture.
