Spirulina is a blue-green algae that’s been used for many years. Traditionally, it was used in Mexico by the Aztecs to make dried green cakes used for increasing stamina on long trips.
Spirulina is a good source of protein, and iron, while also providing antioxidants. Additionally, it’s a great option for allergy sufferers, as studies have shown that it can help to alleviate symptoms of sneezing and nasal congestion associated with allergic rhinitis.
Spirulina is green in colour and in all honesty, it tastes exactly how you would imagine algae to taste. But believe it or not, it’s actually quite easily hidden in foods. Smoothies are a common go to for sneaking spirulina into your diet, but our favourite way is through Organika’s Spirulina Globes recipe.
These nutrient packed globes are the perfect go-to for your afternoon snack. They pack a powerful punch of plant-based protein and fiber leaving you satiated until your next meal, with just the perfect amount of natural sweetness.

Spirulina Globes Recipe
Makes 12 globes | Prep time: 15 minutes
This recipe is vegan, gluten free and nut free.
- 1 cup dates
- 1/3 cup tahini
- 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds
- 1/3 cup ground flaxseeds
- ¼ cup protein powder (we love Vege-Pro plant based protein in vanilla)
- 2 tbsp Organika Organic Spirulina Powder
- ½ cup shredded coconut
Reserve some additional coconut to roll globes in after finished. You can also roll the globes in ground flax or ground pumpkin seeds.
1. Add all the ingredients to a food processor. Process until well combined.
2. Roll mixture into 12 balls, and roll in toppings as desired.
