Province Apothecary Skin Care Tips for Hydration + How to Layer

As March creeps closer and the weather gets cooler, your diet, lifestyle, and skincare routine should adjust to reflect the season. Layering is the key to adapting your skincare routine to the cold dry Canadian winter climate. Layering is a term we use to describe applying multiple hydrating products on the skin morning + night to provide + maintain ample moisture levels within the skin. We suggest trying these 5 tips to maintain ample moisture levels throughout the cold Canadian winter:

1

Exfoliate your skin! Gently exfoliate your skin with our Daily Glow Dry Facial Brush. This will help slough away all of the dead dry skin cells sitting on the top surface of the skin. It will allow other skincare products to work more effectively and penetrate deeper. Exfoliating every 3 days aids in maintaining a soft, supple texture and healthy glow to the skin.

2

Don’t forget to Hydrate! Internal hydration is equally important as external hydration. You have definitely heard this before – but our advice is to always drink eight glasses of water a day. Also, keep in mind that hot drinks like coffee and caffeinated tea will reduce your hydration levels. As the weather gets colder and you are spending more time sipping warm drinks, remember to increase your water intake.

3

Layering is key! Use a face serum on clean skin, followed by a lotion or balm to maximize hydration and lock in moisture. This creates a protective layer against the outdoor elements. We always apply our Vital Nutrient Face + Eye Balm, as well as Hydrating Rescue Balm before heading outdoors; it truly does what it says, protects and restores our skin back to radiance.

4

Massage your skin care products into your skin. Not only is this a great stress reliever, but it’s an ample way to increase circulation within the body. Colder weather can constrict blood cells so it’s important to keep things flowing by massaging the skin regularly. Proper blood flow rejuvenates, detoxifies and oxygenates the cells, which is essential for anti-aging. This will stimulate collagen and elastin fibers. Massage your cleanser into the skin for a minute or two before rinsing off. Massage your face serum and/or moisturizer into the skin for 3-5 minutes to achieve optimal results

5

Use a humidifier in your home + workspace. When it’s dry enough, the moisture on our top surface layer of skin will evaporate into the air. Adding humidity to your air will in turn infuse your skin with moisture – soothing dry cracked skin, healing sore acne blemishes, and calming irritated skin conditions.
