Essential oils can be a great addition to your baby’s nursery, but knowing which ones are baby-friendly is important! Here are some of our favourite tips for using essential oils for the nursery.
Diffuser Blends
Our experts agree that diffusing essential oils is the safest option for babies under 3 months, and the right diffuser blend can be a welcome addition to nursery for little ones of any age. NOW Essential Oils’ Cheer Up Buttercup and Peaceful Night blends are great to create an uplifting or peaceful atmosphere in your baby’s nursery. Just add a few drops to your diffuser, and enjoy.
Using Essential Oils Topically
Once baby is 3 months+, you can start using some essential oils topically. Lavender, Lemon, and Tea Tree oil are all safe for topical use when diluted with a carrier oil like coconut oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil. A good rule to follow for babies between 3 and 12 months is to dilute every 1-2 drops of essential oil in 2 tablespoons (or 30 ml) of carrier oil.
Here are some of our favourite ways to use essential oils topically to give baby relief from some common ailments, from our friends at NOW Essential Oils:
Cough & Cold Relief

You can store this mixture in a small vial until you’re ready to use it. To use, add 1 drop of mixture to 2 tsp of carrier oil and massage into chest and upper back every 30 mins for 4 hours, and then every 2 hours until symptoms subside.
Ear Infection Relief
(3 – 12 mos)
- 1 drop Lavender Oil
- 1 drop Tea Tree Oil
- 2 teaspoons carrier oil
To use, apply 1 drop of the mixture on a cotton ball and place in the ear, or apply a small amount of the mixture around the ear. If using a cotton ball, replace every 30 mins.
