Just like a closet, your makeup bag should change with the seasons. Spring is the perfect time to wear brighter shades, use lighter formulas, clean out expired products, and green your beauty routine with makeup that is better for you and the environment!
Here are four ways to spring clean your makeup bag:
1. Clean all makeup brushes
Dermatologists recommend that you clean your makeup brushes daily. If that sounds like too much work, aim to clean makeup brushes at least once a week by using a gentle cleanser such as pure castile soap. Try Dr. Bronner’s Organic Pure Castile Liquid Soap!
2. Toss expired makeup
Makeup does not last forever. In fact, it can be a breeding ground for bacteria which can cause breakouts and infections.
Use these general guidelines to know how long to keep your makeup:
- Mascara: 3-6 months
- Eyeliner: 6 months to 1 year
- Liquid foundation: 6 months
- Powder makeup (like blush, eyeshadow, and foundation): 1-2 years
- Lipstick: 2 years
3. Switch to eco-friendly makeup brands
Use the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic database to see how your makeup rates. For products that contain toxic ingredients, consider swapping them out with cleaner, more eco-friendly options. A good place to start is to replace all lip products. Not only are you absorbing toxic chemicals into your body by wearing certain lip products, you’re eating them too! Try 100% Pure lipstick and lip gloss for vibrant shades that are actually good enough to eat!
4. Use multi-purpose products
Tired of lugging around that heavy makeup bag? Save space and lighten up your look for the spring by using multi-purpose products. Try Elate Clean Cosmetics Universal Crème as a dewy blush or sheer lip colour. Also, try a multi-purpose tinted moisturizer like Andalou Naturals Brightening Vitamin C Beauty Balm with SPF 30. It’s sun protection and a sheer moisturizing tint all in one!
