At-Home Workouts You Can Do in 12 Minutes
We’re smack in the middle of January, and in the midst of a winter freeze in Toronto. How are your New Year’s Resolutions going?
When we surveyed our customers about New Year’s Resolutions we discovered that 40% of you planned to exercise more. This was on both Rebecca and Erin’s lists, too: “Exercise keeps me sane,” says Erin. “The physical benefits are important, but the mental benefits even more so. I started exercising while I was in university and was probably suffering from a mild form of Seasonal Affective Disorder. Exercise helped me keep it at bay. Now, if I don’t exercise it severely impacts my mood.”
Rebecca wants to do more yoga. “Unfortunately, exercise doesn’t fit into my life – it is hard with work demands and a young family. I want to do more yoga in 2016 – yoga definitely relaxes me and make my entire body feel good well beyond the yoga session. And, it is good for me to have the time to focus on myself and my health.”
To make sure you’re fitting exercise into your life, Toronto-based fitness/ health expert and personal trainer Erin Phelan of www.80-percent.com recommends trying to live the 80-20 way. “Realistically, you might not workout six days a week – but can you manage four? The number one reason people don’t exercise is they say they don’t have time,”says Phelan. “To put it bluntly: if you have time to go on Facebook for 10 minutes, you have time to exercise. Book it as an appointment with yourself – beyond helping you manage your weight and make you fitter, exercise improves your mood, helps you sleep better and boosts your energy. In 2016, you really can’t afford not to exercise.”
Luckily, we’ve got a plan to help us (and you too!) exercise more in 2016. We reached out to Erin Phelan and Lea Amaral, a yoga instructor and owner of Energia Athletics in Toronto to help create workouts that we can work into our schedules. The best news: you only need 12 minutes, and you can do everything at home!
