Whether you’re talking cleaning or body care, castile soap is a pretty impressive product. Made from just saponified plant oils, the ingredients are as green and clean as can be, and the soap is completely biodegradable too. Plus, with a seemingly endless list of uses, you can easily replace multiple products in your home with a single bottle of castile soap!
Today I’m sharing my three favorite recipes for cleaning with this wonder soap. All three work with any brand and scent of liquid castile soap, and there are plenty of great options to choose from. Dr. Bronner’s is a well-known classic for a reason, and I also love Green Beaver’s version, made with Canadian grown sunflower oil.
Citrus Multi-Purpose Household Cleaner
- 1/4 cup liquid castile soap
- 3 cups water
- 10 drops tea tree essential oil
- 8 drops orange essential oil
- 8 drops grapefruit essential oil
Combine all ingredients in a large spray bottle and shake gently to combine.
To use:
Spray onto dirty surfaces and wipe clean.
For windows, follow with a 50/50 dilution of white vinegar and water for glass that really shines.
For tougher cleaning (toilets, bathtubs, grout, etc.), sprinkle baking soda onto a scrub brush or directly onto the surface, then add multi-purpose cleaner and get to scrubbing!
Laundry Detergent
- 2 cups liquid castile soap
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil
- 10 drops lavender essential oil
Combine castile soap and essential oils in a bottle. Use 1/8 to 1/4 cup per load of laundry. If desired, add 1/4 cup of white vinegar during the rinse cycle as a fabric softener.
Lemon Pine Floor Cleaner
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup liquid castile soap
- 8 drops lemon essential oil
- 8 drops pine essential oil
- 5 drops tea tree essential oil
- Water
Add castile soap and essential oils to a large bucket, then fill the rest of the way with hot tap water. Mop as usual — works great on virtually any kind of flooring, no rinsing required!
